BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHURCH MUSIC DEPARTMENT FROM THE DIOCESAN THEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF CARANSEBEȘ

Abstract

The Romanian Orthodox Diocesan Theological Institute of Caransebeș was established in 1865 after the hierarchical separation of Romanians and Serbs from the Austro-Hungarian Empire initiated by Metropolitan Andrei Șaguna. The Diocesan Theological Institute of Caransebeș found a special place in both the cultural and spiritual life of the Romanians in Banat. Thus, it not only constituted a center of theological education, but also became a keeper of the Romanian language in that period of the early 20th century in which the national feelings of Romanians outside the borders of the motherland were expressed more and more forcefully. Church music from the pew, but also harmonic choral or instrumental music, were subjects on which a special emphasis was placed, along with the liturgical and typical practice of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
