Abstract

This article provides a brief, introductory overview into the activity and creation of Czech composer Pavel Haas (1889-1944), in light of extensive information surfaced and compiled critically in recent years. Remembered most often as a student of Leoš Janáček, as well as part of the Terezín composers, Haas is nonetheless deserving of a more in-depth inquiry, with a fuller account of his life and works. The article also outlines several creative lines, with particular interest in highlighting the composer’s penchant for modern-oriented, fantasy-driven, and emotionally-compelling writing.
