Abstract

Doina is one of the most extensively researched categories of folklore. Even nowadays, there are still a number of confusions regarding the doina genre and the so-called doina-like style. It is worth mentioning the fascinating spread and evolution of the term doina in various regions of the country, particularly as a result of the impact of literature and the transfer of cultural values. Over the past two centuries, the term has been employed to characterise musical compositions performed with rubato, adorned with intricate ornamentation, and possessing a melancholic tone. The doina, known as the love doina, is specific to the southern region of the country and is also prevalent in Teleorman County. This phenomenon has a very recent origin and evolved as a result of fiddlers' influence. It incorporates the distinctive characteristics of the doina, the melodic style of doina proper, and possibly oriental music.
