PASCALY TOUR IN BANAT – FROM THE MULTIPLE IDENTITY TO THE WORLD STAGE

Abstract

Starting from Virgil Birou’s attempts to retrace Pascaly’s tourin Banat and to retrieve proofs of the performances that took place in 1868(in Oraviţa, Timișoara and Lugoj), this paper highlights some specificcultural aspects (belonging to the “check-list” conceived by Anne MarieThiesse). It also emphasizes different shades of the multiple identity andfocuses on the dynamic relation among individual, multiple and nationalidentity. Some documents that we have found in Virgil Birou’s files,accompanied by details about Pascaly’s performances, suggest both theinner harmony and dissolution that feature Banat as an intermediary spacewith multicultural structure and cross-identities.
