MARŢIAN NEGREA – MARTIE: BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND MUSICAL LANGUAGE

Abstract

Martie (March) was originally written for flute and reciter on a poetry by Lucian Blaga. The music from flute was adapted for clarinet by the clarinetist A. O. Popa and later it was included in the Metoda de Clarinet vol. II (Clarinet Method vol. II) by Dumitru Ungureanu. Since the music was originally based on the text, the lack of symmetry and rhyme is reflected in the music through a stream of unexpected melodic and rhythmic events. As this work presents hints of the Second Viennese School and Schoenberg’s “emancipation of the dissonance”, a posttonal analysis is provided. Martie is of particular interest for clarinetists because of its technical and interpretative challenges.
