MUSIC – MEANING AND STRUCTURE

Abstract

This paper intends to highlight the relationship between musical meanings and musical structures from a different perspective. For this purpose, a wide range of scholarly opinions and concepts published over several decades were presented and analyzed. The difficulties and challenges of approaching the multiple aspects of this relationship reveal the complexity of the task. The author’s focus is placed on investigating the specificities of the above-mentioned relationship in an attempt to identify the most adequate methods and techniques of analysis. Setting up an analogy with verbal language structures is considered a way of approaching the study of musical structures while considering the specific aspects of the latter. The analogy was extended to the concept of musical meanings whose close correlation with musical structure results in terms of the effects on the listener’s consciousness produced by certain elements of the musical text.
