DA VINCI AND VESALIUS – PERCEPTION AND IMAGINATION IN THE DISSECTION AMPHITHEATRE

Abstract

This article aims to compare two great personalities in the context of the Renaissance anatomical study – namely Leonardo da Vinci and Andreas Vesalius, a study that came in a variety of forms: dissection, graphic illustration, clinical observation, engraving, experiment, treatise publication, etc. The history of these approaches of the body is vast, and the intention is to map the empirical, moral and intellectual horizons over which the creations of two have differently exerted a major influence, at some point, on the modern figurative, by particularly and expressively referring to the horror, pathos, fragility or endurance of the anatomical body.
