William Turner Walton is rightly considered one of the most representative British composers of the 20th century. His works include choral and orchestral compositions, chamber works and ceremonial music. His style is characterized by brilliant orchestration with surprising instrumental combinations, rhythmic energy, spiced harmonies, sweeping romantic melody and excellent contrapuntal technique. His Viola Concerto is among his most known works; it is also one that is being played most frequently. The Concerto is rich in inspired musical themes, with deep content which allows the interpreting musician to express their instrumental virtuosity alongside with their musical thinking and professional maturity.
